09.4MATERIALS GUIDE

Know what you wear.

A plain-language guide to common footwear and bag materials, their qualities, and the care decisions they need.

LEATHER & COATED SURFACES

01

Structure with character.

Natural leather may show grain variation and develop character with use. Coated and synthetic surfaces can offer consistent color and easier cleaning, but may respond differently to heat, abrasion, and solvents.

  • Confirm the product label before using any cream or protector
  • Keep pale surfaces away from dark color-transfer sources
  • Do not assume a product suitable for leather is suitable for coated materials

TEXTILES & MESH

02

Lightness and flexibility.

Textiles can be breathable and lightweight, while open meshes may be more vulnerable to snagging. Gentle dry brushing and limited spot cleaning are normally safer than saturation.

HARDWARE & EMBELLISHMENT

03

Details need a lighter touch.

Metal finishes, stones, sequins, prints, and decorative trims can change through friction, humidity, perfume, or repeated impact. Treat natural wear as different from a manufacturing issue.

  • Keep hardware dry and free of residue
  • Do not polish plated hardware aggressively
  • Store embellished pieces separately to prevent abrasion
